do it anyway!

As we wrap up an incredible month of conversations and head into the Canada Day long weekend, I’ve been reflecting on one idea that came out of our discussions and has stayed with me ever since.

One of the gentlemen in our group said something incredibly simple:

“Find one thing every day that scares you… and do it anyway.”

Not because the goal is to become reckless. Not because fear is a weakness. But because confidence is built the same way every structure I’ve ever worked on was built—one deliberate piece at a time.

Looking back over my own life, every major opportunity began with stepping into something I wasn’t ready for. Engineering leadership. Starting businesses. Speaking in front of audiences. Moving to Costa Rica. Writing books. Standing up publicly for men’s mental health. None of those decisions were comfortable when I made them. They were uncomfortable because they required growth, and growth rarely asks for permission before it arrives.

One of the themes that kept emerging throughout our meetings this month was that many of us have unknowingly allowed our worlds to become smaller. We visit the same places, spend time with the same people, consume the same information, and follow the same routines. Comfort quietly becomes our default, while curiosity slowly disappears.

As a professional, I learned that innovation never comes from repeating yesterday’s solution and expecting tomorrow’s results to change. Progress begins when someone is willing to question assumptions, test a new idea, and accept that failure is often part of learning. Life is no different. Every new skill, every meaningful relationship, and every worthwhile achievement begins by stepping beyond what is familiar.

So here’s the challenge our group is taking into July, and I invite anyone reading this to join us.

Every day, do one thing that scares you.

Start the conversation you’ve been avoiding.

Walk into the networking event where you know no one.

Take the course you’ve convinced yourself you’re not qualified for.

Learn a skill you’ve always admired but never attempted.

Reach out to someone you’ve wanted to meet.

Volunteer.

Speak up.

Ask the question.

Apply for the opportunity.

Go to the conference you’ve talked yourself out of attending because you thought you didn’t belong.

You may discover that the only thing standing between the life you have and the life you want is a series of small moments where courage quietly beats comfort.

By the end of July, don’t measure success by how many fears disappeared. Measure it by how many new experiences, new friendships, new skills, and new opportunities you created because you refused to let fear make another decision for you.

Growth has never been found inside our comfort zones.

Let’s make July the month we deliberately step outside them.

Who’s in?
